ŠIZIKA – Šivanje, zakrpe i kreativne aktivnosti (Sewing, Patches, and Creative Activities)

In today’s world, characterized by a fast-paced lifestyle, excessive consumption, and a tendency towards disposable solutions regardless of cost and consequences, it is inevitable to recognize the need to adopt some old patterns of behavior and living. Sewing, a skill that is slowly fading, emerges as an ideal option to bridge the past and a more sustainable future.

Sewing practices calmness, which has long-term positive effects on mental health and motor skills. It raises awareness of the negative impact of fast fashion on the environment and actively contributes to more sustainable consumption and waste reduction. In sewing workshops, participants meet like-minded individuals, sharing experiences and ideas. Those experienced in sewing techniques, who can operate a sewing machine independently, have the ability to create their own patterns and transform old clothing into something entirely new and personal, thus becoming recyclers rather than consumers.

For all these reasons, the ŠIZIKA project aims to awaken interest and enthusiasm among young people for adopting this simple yet necessary and useful skill. Additionally, the emphasis is on volunteering, which in itself brings numerous opportunities and advantages, such as enriching free time, contributing to the community, reducing stress, and more.

Project goals:

The general goal of the project is to enable young people to actively engage in environmental protection and sustainable development and to acquire new skills and competencies needed to compete in the job market.

Specific goals:

1. Enhancing the knowledge and skills of young people in the local community through sewing workshops.

In sewing workshops, young people will have the opportunity to gain new knowledge and share existing ones. They will have the chance to gain new experiences and ideas about sustainable development. By participating and mastering sewing skills, participants learn techniques and skills not taught in the formal education system.

2. Increasing the knowledge and skills of young people for active engagement in environmental protection and sustainable development of the local community by reducing consumerism.

By encouraging sewing, we give “old” clothes a new shine and role, reducing consumerism and the need to buy new clothes. By using existing clothes, we reduce the ecological pressure of large amounts of discarded textiles and repurpose clothing into something we need, giving it a new role.

3. Improving youth employment through active volunteering.

By participating in the activity, which has gained special quality through volunteer engagement, young people can firsthand experience how they can impact the local community as volunteers and how an entrepreneurial idea can be realized.

Project activities:

  • Call for involvement in the ŠIZIKA project and selection of participants
  • Sewing workshops
  • Educational workshops on “Waste and Priority to Reduce Waste Generation”
  • Long-term volunteer program for young people in the Sunce association
  • Promotion and visibility of the project.
