Monitoring of the Seagrass Posidonia oceanica in the Telašćica Nature Park Area

As part of the service “Monitoring of the Seagrass Posidonia oceanica in the Telašćica Nature Park Area,” Sunce will carry out the eighth consecutive monitoring of Posidonia meadows in this protected area.

Posidonia oceanica is an endemic marine flowering plant that inhabits the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea. It forms dense and expansive meadows that represent one of the most important and richest marine ecosystems. These meadows provide habitat for numerous species, contribute to biodiversity, stabilize the seabed, and play a significant role in reducing coastal erosion. Additionally, Posidonia significantly contributes to carbon storage, thereby helping combat climate change.

Despite its wide distribution, Posidonia meadows are highly sensitive and threatened by a range of human activities. Among the most significant threats are boat anchoring, unsustainable nautical tourism, pollution, and coastal construction, all of which disrupt the structure and function of these meadows.

Therefore, such monitoring efforts are of exceptional importance for the implementation of necessary conservation measures, as they enable the assessment of their effectiveness in protecting this crucial habitat.

Service Title: Monitoring of the Seagrass Posidonia oceanica in the Telašćica Nature Park Area

The service includes field data collection on the condition of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica according to the established Protocol at designated locations (Čuška dumboka, Garmenjak, Kobiljak, Sestrice, and Lučice), processing of the collected data, and preparation of a report with results, including a comparison of the results with previous years of monitoring, as well as conclusions and recommendations. Additionally, the service includes research of publicly available data and methods for monitoring environmental conditions and proposals for ways to monitor climatological and oceanographic data (sea temperature throughout the year, wave height).
