The European Union launched the “European Solidarity Corps” program to strengthen and promote solidarity in various areas. Through this program, young people can get involved in volunteering activities across Europe, building bridges between cultures and contributing to important initiatives such as environmental protection.

About ten volunteers have left their mark on Sunce during their many years of participation in the ESC program.

International ESC volunteers in Sunce

Sunce is hosting organization for two or three international volunteers every year for a long-term volunteering activity of 12 months. These volunteers bring their enthusiasm, innovation, and desire for change, and each has the opportunity to develop their personal project with a focus on raising awareness of the challenges of nature and environmental protection in an interactive and fun way.

Alex and Yuliia are volunteering in Sunce for the “Solidarity for Green Dalmatia 2022” project. Recently, they have been engaged in the implementation of their personal projects.

ESC project: “Playing With Waste”

Alex started a project called “Playing With Waste”, which includes six workshops on how to reuse paper rolls creatively. The workshops will be held in six branches of the Radost Kindergarten.

These workshops are intended for children of kindergarten age and their parents. The goal of the project is to educate the youngest about the importance of preserving the environment and to encourage creativity and the development of motor skills through play with materials that can be reused. Parents are involved to help the children in the creative part of the workshop and spend quality time with them. But, also to make them aware of the importance of implementing such ideas at home.

ESC project: “Zero Waste”

Yuliia is focused on the “Zero Waste” project, which takes place in one class of the Skalice Elementary School. Through three workshops, Yuliia educates students about reducing waste and promoting sustainable living. The project aims to introduce students to the concept of zero waste as a possible solution to plastic pollution.

During the first workshop, Yuliia defined the concept of zero waste with the students, talked about the plastic problem, encouraged critical thinking with the “true-false” game, presented the “reduce-reuse-recycle” principle, and taught how to implement small ecological habits into everyday lives. For the next workshop, students will have a practical lesson on making bee wraps – natural, ecological, and biodegradable foils that can replace plastic and aluminum foils. In the end, with the help of several students, they will organize a Swap Fair for the whole school.
