In 2023, Sunce educated almost 4,000 participants

In 2023, Sunce educated more than 3,800 participants through educational programs, workshops, activities, and public events. The numbers clearly show the growing interest in environmental topics. We are also becoming increasingly aware that environmental awareness and education are key factors for a sustainable future. With collective effort, we can create meaningful, positive change in our communities. Below is an overview of some of the activities carried out in 2023.

1. Quality education confirmed with the #SKOCKANO seal

In April 2023, Sunce began the formal evaluation process for obtaining the quality label of the “SKOCKANO” system. Thanks to the organization’s dedication and the strength of its educational programs, Sunce met 84% of the requirements across 62 criteria in 6 standards. As a result, starting 1 June 2023, Sunce proudly carries the #SKOCKANO quality seal, confirming its status as a reliable educational center for environmental awareness and sustainable development.

2. Shaping environmental awareness through education and projects

ML-FREE project research

Environmental awareness and education are essential for the future of our environment. Through the Interreg ML-FREE project, Sunce has been dedicated to raising environmental awareness among young people, and the research results show promising trends. Surveys were conducted among students from the Economic and Administrative School Split and Marco Polo Liceo Artistico Venezia, as well as among teachers, to assess the level of environmental knowledge and awareness. Forty students participated in the study, offering valuable insight into how young people perceive environmental challenges. Students expressed strong concern for the future and emphasized reuse and repair over discarding as key ways to address environmental problems.

Educational programs for children

A total of 622 children took part in various educational activities designed to raise awareness about environmental protection, including the Sea in My Neighborhood, Teaching through art, Playing with garbage, and other educational services.

Workshops for youth

Ninety-nine young participants attended workshops on volunteering, the Green Phone environmental hotline, and the Youth Seminar.

Training for educators

Sixty-three educators from 11 kindergartens learned new methods for teaching children about environmental issues and gained practical tools for creating more sustainable institutions through the Responsible Waste Management program.

3. Active involvement of students and pupils

In addition to educating children and the public, Sunce actively engages students through internships and service-learning programs. In 2023, thirteen students from various faculties (EFST, PMF, SOSM) participated in service-learning programs, while three students from the School of Design, Graphics and Sustainable Construction gained hands-on experience through professional practice. Many more students and high school pupils also joined Sunce’s volunteer activities throughout the year.

4. Strong public interest in community events

Public events offer a valuable opportunity to educate and engage citizens of all ages. In total, Sunce organized 29 public events, attracting more than 1,770 visitors, demonstrating the community’s strong interest in environmental issues.

Events for children focused on ecological themes and games reached 140 young participants, with one notable example being the Greeny festival Makarska.

As every year, Sunce organized public events for all citizens, including the twelfth annual Split Biking Tour, which highlights traffic congestion and promotes sustainable forms of transportation. The event attracted more than 200 participants – a clear sign that the community recognizes its importance.

Throughout the year, Sunce also organized its monthly Swap Fair, holding 11 events with 230 participants. The initiative has been well received – after all, who wouldn’t want to exchange an unused item for something new?

In 2023, Sunce also introduced innovative youth events: QUIZOS, the first environmental quiz in Split (previously known as SQUIZ), and ŠIZIKA, a workshop for repurposing old clothing through creative sewing and textile recycling. These events will continue, and if you’d like to take part, subscribe to our newsletter to receive updates and learn how to register for upcoming activities.

Impressive results and a positive impact

Sunce continues its mission of raising environmental awareness, inspiring both young people and adults to take an active role in protecting the environment. If you want to be part of this green movement, join our educational activities, participate in public events, and help build a more sustainable future! Sunce has recently launched a new program for children and youth – Sailing into STEM – A Map for 2030 – which brings science, technology, engineering, and mathematics closer to young audiences through innovative and interactive activities. To help parents plan their children’s participation, Sunce publishes a monthly events calendar every third day of the month.
