In this annual calendar, you can follow all the activities and events that Sunce prepares throughout the year. Through a monthly overview, we provide information about upcoming projects, workshops, and initiatives, and the calendar will be gradually updated with new content.

JANUARY

January 3 – National Bird Day

This day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of birds, their role in maintaining ecological balance, and the need to protect their habitats.

January 19–30 – Photo Exhibition at Klub Zona

The exhibition “Adriatic Treasures” at Klub Zona features 16 photographs by 11 authors, revealing the beauty and fragility of the Adriatic Sea. Created as part of the ASPEH project, the photographs highlight the importance of preserving marine habitats and biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy visual stories that inspire environmental awareness. During the exhibition, a meet-and-greet with the authors is also organized, offering an opportunity to learn more about the work of the Sunce Association and its nature conservation projects.

January 24 – International Day of Education

International Day of Education reminds us that education is the key to creating a more just society and a sustainable future for all.

January 26 – World Environmental Education Day


Since 1998, Sunce has been providing education for environmental protection and sustainable development through programs that encourage lasting, positive change.

FEBRUARY

February 2–6 – Photo Exhibition at Klub Zona

February 2 – World Wetlands Day


Wetlands are home to 40% of all plant and animal species. They store water, protect against floods, and help combat climate change. On World Wetlands Day, we highlight the importance of protecting and restoring these valuable ecosystems, including Croatian wetlands such as Kopački Rit, Lonjsko Polje, and the Neretva Delta.

February 3 – Swap Fair


The Swap Fair is a monthly event organized by the Sunce Association at Klub Zona. It takes place on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and aims to encourage citizens to adopt more sustainable lifestyles, reduce waste, and consume more responsibly. At this Swap Fair, thanks to the project Let’s Set Sail Through STEM Waters – A Ticket to 2030, visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in STEM experiments.

February 11 – International Day of Women and Girls in Science


The International Day of Women and Girls in Science highlights the importance of equal participation of women in scientific research and innovation. Its goal is to encourage more girls and women to engage in STEM fields and help shape the future of science.

February 13 – World Radio Day


World Radio Day celebrates radio as a medium that informs, educates, and connects people around the world. It reminds us of its important role in sharing news, culture, and a sense of community.

February 14 – Valentine’s Day


Valentine’s Day celebrates love and the small gestures that make a difference. Every year, Sunce shares ideas foreco-friendly gifts that bring joy to your loved ones while also protecting the environment. The best gift, however, is always time spent with the people you love.

February 17 – Global Tourism Resilience Day


Global Tourism Resilience Day reminds us that sustainability and nature-based solutions strengthen the resilience of tourism communities. Through initiatives such as Tourism 2030 – Sustainability Is My Style and Dalmatia Green, we demonstrate how environmentally responsible practices make tourism more resilient to climate change.

February 22 – World Ecology Day


World Ecology Day reminds us of the importance of preserving nature and biodiversity for future generations. It is an opportunity for all of us to take action for a cleaner environment and a more sustainable way of life.

February 26 – Thermos Bottle Day


Thermos Bottle Day reminds us that small environmentally friendly actions can have a significant impact. Using a reusable thermos bottle helps reduce single-use plastic and protects the environment.

February 27 – World NGO Day


World NGO Day highlights the importance of the work carried out by non-governmental organizations such as ours. Through its projects, the Sunce Association educates, connects people, and encourages positive social and environmental change.

February 28 – National Environmental Science Day


National Environmental Science Day reminds us of the importance of understanding nature and its processes.The Education and Information Department of the Sunce Association works to educate and encourage responsible environmental behavior.

MARCH

March 1 – World Seagrass Day


Seagrasses cover only 0.1% of the ocean floor, yet they play a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. They provide habitat for numerous marine species, filter seawater, store significant amounts of carbon, and protect coastlines from erosion, storms, and flooding.

March 3 – World Wildlife Day


Wild species are essential for maintaining the balance of nature and the health of our planet. Protecting them is crucial for preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for both people and nature. Today, more than one million species are threatened with extinction.

March 6 – Fighting Marine Pollution


Have you ever wondered what scientists do to help protect the sea? Join us at a public event in front of Žnjan Pazdigrad Primary School from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and discover how we are tackling marine pollution! The event is organized as part of the project Let’s Set Sail Through STEM Waters – A Ticket to 2030. We will also present part of the ASPEH project exhibition to help visitors better understand the importance of scientific literacy and explain what artificial intelligence is—and what it is not—when it comes to marine pollution.

March 8 – International Women’s Day


Equality, rights, and the contributions of women are essential for building a fairer and more sustainable society. The role of women in communities, education, science, and environmental protection demonstrates their importance in driving positive change.

March 14 – International Ask a Question Day


Asking questions is the first step toward understanding, change, and progress. Questions encourage critical thinking, open new perspectives, and help us better understand the world, society, and environment in which we live.

March 14 – International Day of Action for Rivers


Rivers are a source of life, yet they areincreasingly threatened by pollution and irresponsible human activities. Any environmental issue that is observed can be reported through the Green Phone service, helping us work together to protect water resources and nature.

March 18 – Global Recycling Day


Recycling is important, but reducing waste is always the first and most important step. Less than 20% of the world’s waste is recycled, while most still ends up in landfills. Choose reusable alternatives, avoid single-use plastics, and extend the lifespan of items through sharing and exchange.

March 20 – World Rewilding Day


Nature restoration highlights the importance of partnerships between people and ecosystems in preserving natural resources. Restoration initiatives around the world demonstrate that it is possible to restore ecological balance and resilience.

March 21 – International Day of Forests


Forests are essential for life on Earth, but restoring them is not always as simple as it may seem. Poorly plannedafforestation and the planting of unsuitable species can disrupt natural processes and reduce biodiversity.

March 22 – World Water Day


Water is the foundation of life and healthy ecosystems, making its protection a responsibility shared by all. Through clean-up actions, such as those carried out in the Cetina River canyon, the Sunce Association contributes to preserving water resources and raising awareness about the importance of clean rivers and seas.

March 26–29 – Croatia Nautic Show


The Sunce Association will participate as an exhibitor at one of the most important regional gatherings of sea and boating enthusiasts, shipbuilders, fishers, and tourism sector representatives—theCroatia Nautic Show. The 18th edition of the event will take place fromMarch 26 to 29, 2026, at Marina Kaštela in Kaštel Gomilica. The Sunce stand will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., where visitors can learn about our Adriatic Sea conservation activities, including anchoring education, STEM experiments, and a panel discussion on one of the growing challenges at sea—wastewater from vessels.

March 28 – Earth Hour


By switching off lights for one hour, we send a message about the importance of protecting our planet and using resources responsibly. Earth Hour reminds us that even small changes in our daily habits can have a significant impact on the environment.

March 30 – International Day of Zero Waste


Instead of the traditional “take–use–dispose” model, the circular economy promotes waste reduction, resource conservation, and creating value from what we already have. Every decision we make—from reusing items to making thoughtful purchases—is a small step toward a more sustainable future.

APRIL

April 1 – April Fools’ Day


A day of laughter and jokes that reminds us how important humor is in everyday life. While we enjoy a good prank today, let’s not forget that when it comes to nature and the environment, there is no room for jokes—responsible decisions make a real difference.

April 2 – International Fact-Checking Day


In an age of misinformation, fact-checking is more important than ever. By verifying sources, comparing information, and thinking critically, each of us can contribute to a more informed and responsible society.

April 3 – World Aquatic Animal Day


Aquatic animals play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine and freshwater ecosystems and the health of our planet. Protecting them is essential for preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for both people and nature.

April 17 – International Bat Appreciation Day


Bats are important allies of nature because they control insect populations, pollinate plants, and help maintain ecosystem balance. A single bat can eat thousands of mosquitoes in one night, so the next time darkness falls, take a moment to appreciate these silent nocturnal flyers.

April 20–23 – International Mother Earth Day

Throughout this week, the Sunce Association will organize a variety of activities to mark International Mother Earth Day.

April 21 – World Creativity and Innovation Day


Creativity and innovation drive change and help us find new solutions to social and environmental challenges. Every new idea, no matter how small, can be the beginning of positive change.

April 24 – Fashion Revolution Day


This day commemorates the Rana Plaza tragedy and promotes the message that no one should lose their life because of fashion. The Swap Fair combats overconsumption and growing amounts of waste while encouraging more responsible habits and the reuse of items.

April 26 – World Renewable Energy Day


Renewable energy sources are essential for reducing emissions, protecting the environment, and ensuring a more secure energy future. The transition to clean energy is an important step toward a more sustainable society and a more resilient planet.

MAY

May 3 – World Sun Day


The Sun is a source of energy, life, and renewable solutions for the future. Its role in producing clean energy and sustaining natural systems reminds us of the importance of harnessing solar power in a sustainable way.

May 5 – Swap Fair


The monthly Swap fair at Club Zona takes place on the first tuesday of every month from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

May 8 – Science on Marjan


As part of the project“Let’s Set Sail Through STEM Waters – A Ticket to 2030”, we are organizing the event “Science in the Service of the Sea.” The event brings together scientific institutions, associations, and educational organizations with the aim of making science accessible to children, young people, and adults through engaging, fun, and interactive activities.

Location: Split Technology Park, Dračevac 3D
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

May 15–16 – Training: “Citizens as Observers of the Adriatic Sea’s Condition”


This training is intended for anyone who wishes to learn more about the sea and actively contribute to its protection. Over the course of two days, participants will learn how to use citizen science tools to record observations at sea, identify invasive species, and monitor seagrass meadows and other changes in the marine environment.

Alongside engaging lectures, practical examples, and networking opportunities, participation in the training is free of charge with prior registration by May 5, 2026. The training is organized within the framework of the Interreg BIOPRESSADRIA project.

May 19 – Quizos


Take part in an environmental pub quiz and test your knowledge for a chance to win valuable prizes. The quiz will be held at Caffe Bar Tinel (Cvite Fiskovića 3), starting at 7:00 p.m. Participation is free, and registration is available via an online form.

May 20 – World Bee Day


Bees are essential for our food systems and biodiversity. They pollinate around 75% of crops that produce fruits, vegetables, and seeds. In addition to honey, they also produce wax, which can be used to create natural, reusable alternatives to plastic. Their survival is an important indicator of environmental health.

May 21 – European Natura 2000 Day


The Natura 2000 network protects Europe’s most valuable habitats and species. Through the WASTEREDUCE project, strategies and solutions are being developed to reduce waste in protected areas and Natura 2000 sites.

May 21 – Festival “Fishermen and Fishermen’s Complaints”


The festival will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the square in front of Split’s fish market. Visitors can look forward to an engaging program dedicated to sustainable fisheries, tourism, zero-waste gastronomy, and innovative ways of using marine litter.

The festival is organized as part of the Interreg Italy–Croatia FishNoWaste project, with the aim of bringing topics such as fisheries, marine conservation, and sustainable practices closer to citizens through interaction between fishers, scientists, associations, and the local community.

May 22 – Sustainability Festival


The festival will take place at Split’s Green Market (Pazar), in front of Tommy and next to the flower stalls, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

It is organized by a coalition of Split-based associations on the occasion of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development and as part of the campaign “Croatia Volunteers.” Visitors can expect information stands, educational and interactive activities, workshops, and programs for children, youth, and adults, all aimed at promoting sustainable development, volunteering, and active citizenship.

May 22 – International Day for Biological Diversity and Nature Protection Day in Croatia


Biodiversity is the foundation of life on Earth, and the sea is one of its richest environments. Through the campaign “Where Do You Anchor?” we encourage responsible behavior and the protection of marine habitats.

May 23 – World Turtle Day


Turtles are an important part of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, yet they are increasingly threatened by pollution, climate change, and human activities. Their protection is essential for preserving biodiversity and maintaining healthy natural environments.

May 24 – European Day of Parks


Parks and protected areas safeguard biodiversity, natural ecosystems, and landscape values. Their protection is crucial for nature conservation and for ensuring a sustainable future for people and the environment.

JUNE

June 3 – World Bicycle Day

The bicycle is a simple and sustainable means of transportation that reduces pollution and contributes to a healthier lifestyle. The Split Cycling Event brought together 216 cyclists and around 300 participants, demonstrating how strongly citizens recognize the value of active and sustainable mobility in the city.

June 5 – World Environment Day


Environmental pollution is one of the greatest challenges of our time. According to United Nations data, around 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the oceans every year. This day reminds us that responsible habits and care for nature are essential for a healthy planet and a sustainable future.

June 5 – International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing


Illegal fishing poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems, fish stocks, and the livelihoods of fishers. Combating such practices is essential for protecting the sea and ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources.

June 6–7 – Eco Festival Primošten


The Pongo Diving Club is organizing the Eco Festival in Primošten. Sunce will participate by hosting a STEM workshop on the theme “The Importance of a Healthy Sea” for younger generations, presenting the educational exhibition “Plasticamente – Plastic (Night)mares” from the FishNoWaste project, and screening an AI-generated film about Posidonia seagrass created as part of the BIOPRESSADRIA project.

June 8 – World Oceans Day and Nature Protection Day of Croatia’s Mountain Regions


Oceans and mountains are essential for the balance of nature and life on Earth—they provide water, oxygen, and biodiversity. Their protection is crucial for preserving natural resources and ensuring a sustainable future for people and the environment.

June 15 – Nature Photography Day


Nature photography helps us better understand and appreciate the environment while also documenting changes in ecosystems. Photographs can raise awareness, inspire conservation efforts, and become an important tool for protecting nature.

June 16 – Final International Conference


The AWASTER Final International Conference brings together representatives from public authorities, businesses, educational institutions, and support organizations to discuss how circular economy initiatives can move from pilot actions to wider implementation and long-term impact.

The event will present the main achievements and lessons learned within the AWASTER project, together with examples of good practices and experiences from other EU initiatives.

June 16 – World Sea Turtle Day


Sea turtles play a vital role in marine ecosystems, but they are increasingly threatened by climate change and plastic pollution. Rising sand temperatures and microplastics pose additional risks to their survival. The ASPEH project carries out activities focused on their conservation and the protection of marine habitats.

June 18 – Sustainable Gastronomy Day


Research conducted as part of the Plastic-Free Croatian Island project highlighted the importance of reducing plastic waste in the hospitality and tourism sectors and finding more sustainable solutions—both on our plates and in our glasses.

June 24 – Upcycling Day


Upcycling gives old items new value and extends their lifespan instead of allowing them to become waste. Through creative reuse, we reduce the amount of waste generated and contribute to a more sustainable way of life.

June 30 – Social Media Day


Social media connects people, spreads information, and can inspire positive change in society and the environment. By using digital platforms responsibly, we can raise awareness, share knowledge, and encourage more sustainable habits.

JULY

July 3 – International Plastic Bag Free Day


Plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose, and microplastics threaten nature and enter the food chain. The EU aims to reduce their consumption, and each of us can contribute to change through a simple habit—using reusable bags.

July 9 – Light spectacle about Posidonia as part of the BIOPRESSADRIA project

July 15 – World Youth Skills Day


The development of practical and creative skills is important for empowering young people. The ŠIZIKA project encourages youth to learn sewing, repair, and creative reuse, showing how skills can become a tool for a more sustainable lifestyle.

July 18 – World Listening Day


Listening is the foundation of understanding, dialogue, and quality relationships. By carefully listening to other people, the community, and nature, we create space for better decisions and positive change.

July 28 – World Nature Conservation Day


Nature is the foundation of life, but also a sensitive system that requires our care and responsibility. Photography can be a powerful tool in its preservation—the exhibition “Adriatic Treasures” presents through photographs both the beauty and vulnerability of the Adriatic Sea, encouraging reflection on the importance of protecting nature and marine ecosystems.

July 30 – Light projection “Adriatic Treasures”


In Komiža, attend the light projection Adriatic Treasures as part of the ASPEH project, showcasing endangered habitats and species of the Adriatic Sea.

July 31 – World Ranger Day


Rangers work daily to protect natural values, biodiversity, and protected areas. Their work, knowledge, and dedication are essential for safeguarding nature and preserving the environment for future generations.

AUGUST

August 12 – International Youth Day


Young people are important drivers of local change and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Their role is especially significant because many of these goals are implemented at the local level. Through learning programs, internships, and volunteering, young people develop knowledge and skills.

August 30–31 – International Bat Night


Bats are important allies of nature because they regulate insect populations and contribute to ecosystem balance. International Bat Night highlights the importance of their protection and helps dispel misconceptions about these beneficial nocturnal flyers.

September 25 – World Maritime Day


Maritime transport connects people, economies, and cultures, but it also has a significant impact on the sea and the environment. Sustainable management of marine resources and responsible use of the sea are essential for preserving marine ecosystems and the future of coastal communities.

September 27 – World Tourism Day


Tourism has a strong impact on the environment and local communities, which is why sustainable practices in the tourism sector are becoming increasingly important. The Dalmatia Green certification encourages accommodation providers to operate responsibly and reduce their environmental impact.

September 28 – International Day for Universal Access to Information


Access to information enables citizens to participate in decision-making and actively engage in environmental and social protection. Through the Green Phone service, citizens can report environmental issues and obtain information about their rights, promoting greater transparency and institutional accountability.

September 29 – International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste


Food waste also means wasting the water, energy, and labor used in its production. By changing habits, planning better, and adopting zero-waste cooking, food waste can be significantly reduced.

OCTOBER

October 4 – World Animal Day


Our relationship with animals reflects our responsibility toward nature and society. This day reminds us of the importance of protecting animals, ensuring their welfare, and creating a coexistence between humans and the animal world in harmony with nature.

October 6 – World Habitat Day


Habitats such as marine caves, sandy and muddy seabeds, and Posidonia seagrass meadows are essential for preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health. As part of the ASPEH project, we developed a guide on how to behave responsibly in these three habitats.

October 5 – World Teachers’ Day


The dedicated work of teachers and educators is essential for shaping future generations. As part of the VolonTERRA project, free educational materials are available that encourage the development of social skills, volunteering, and environmental responsibility in teaching.

October 11 – World Migratory Bird Day


Migratory birds travel thousands of kilometers each year, connecting continents and ecosystems, with some species covering more than 10,000 kilometers during migration. Their journeys depend on preserved habitats such as wetlands, forests, and coastal areas.

October 14 – International E-Waste Day


Electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world, and responsible management of devices helps reduce environmental impact and preserve valuable resources. Look around you and count all the old devices you no longer use—you can donate, recycle, or repair them.

October 15 – November 15 – Croatian Book Month


Books open space for learning, reflection, and understanding the world. The book Permaculture: Sustainable Garden, Healthy Soil, Happy People by Karmela and Miroslav Kiš shows through practical examples how knowledge from books can be applied in everyday life and encourage more sustainable habits.

October 16 – World Food Day


Food is not only a matter of nutrition but also of responsible use of resources and waste generated during its production and preparation. Zero-waste cooking shows how ingredients can be fully utilized, and the fact that we waste up to one-third of all food produced highlights the importance of changing habits in the kitchen and everyday life.

October 22 – Sustainability Day


Sustainable development is based on a balance between the environment, society, and the economy. The festival “Sustainability Is My Style” showed how sustainability ideas can be brought closer to citizens through concrete activities and everyday habits.

October 24 – International Day of Climate Action


This day encourages urgent action against climate change and concrete steps by individuals, communities, and institutions. The DesirMED project develops nature-based solutions to increase the resilience of Mediterranean regions and preserve ecosystems with long-term social and economic benefits.

October 31 – World Cities Day


This day highlights the role of cities in sustainable development and quality of life. It encourages reflection on smart, green, and inclusive urban environments.

NOVEMBER

November 5 – International Volunteer Managers Day


Volunteer coordinators play a key role in connecting people, ideas, and activities, and in creating high-quality volunteering programs. International Volunteer Managers Day highlights their contribution to organizing, supporting, and motivating volunteers, thereby strengthening communities and encouraging positive social change.

November 17 – International Students’ Day


This day highlights the important role of young people in driving positive social change. It serves as a reminder of the importance of students’ rights, solidarity, and active participation in society. Read more about how students organized their first Swap Fair—from idea to implementation.

November 17–23 – Global Education Week


This week is dedicated to promoting understanding of global issues such as climate change, human rights, solidarity, and sustainable development. Its goal is to encourage critical thinking and active participation of young people and citizens in building a fairer and more sustainable society at both local and global levels.

November 19 – International Men’s Day


International Men’s Day highlights the importance of positive male role models, mental health, and equality in society. It encourages discussion about the role of men in families and communities and emphasizes their active contribution to society, solidarity, and sustainable development.

November 20 – World Children’s Day


This day is observed to highlight children’s rights, their well-being, and access to quality education and a healthy environment. Through the Volonterra project, Sunce participated last year in building a school garden at OŠ Brda, providing children with a space for learning in nature, developing environmental awareness, and actively engaging in environmental protection and sustainability topics.

November 21 – World Fisheries Day


This day highlights the importance of sustainable fisheries, marine ecosystem protection, and the preservation of fish stocks for future generations. The FishNoWaste project raises awareness of waste in fisheries and the sea, promoting responsible use of marine resources and the protection of the marine environment through cooperation between fishers, communities, and institutions.

November 22–30 – European Week for Waste Reduction


This week aims to raise awareness about the importance of waste prevention, reuse, and responsible consumption. It emphasizes the role of individuals, organizations, and communities in creating more sustainable habits and promoting concrete actions such as swapping items, recycling, and education on the circular economy.

November 26 – World Sustainable Transport Day


Sustainable transport means cleaner air, less noise, and healthier cities. Walking, cycling, and using public transport reduce emissions and make everyday travel more pleasant for everyone.

November 29 – International Buy Nothing Day


This day reminds us that we do not need to constantly buy things to live well. Instead of consumption, we should choose sustainable alternatives such as the Swap Fair and the Šizika workshop, where sharing, learning, and reuse help build community and protect the environment.

DECEMBER

December 5 – International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development


This day is observed to highlight the important role of volunteers in the economic and social development of communities. Sunce volunteers and ESC volunteers actively participate in cleanup actions, the Swap Fair, Earth Day celebrations, as well as educational workshops and public events, thereby contributing to environmental protection, raising public awareness, and strengthening the local community.

December 5 – World Soil Day


Soil is the foundation of life: it provides us with food, water, and ecosystem stability. Healthy soil means a healthy planet. Let’s protect soil today to ensure our future tomorrow.

December 11 – International Mountain Day


This day is observed to emphasize the importance of mountains for nature, people, and climate balance. Mountains are essential for providing drinking water, preserving biodiversity, and supporting sustainable development. Their protection is crucial as they are particularly vulnerable to climate change and human impact.
