Sunce conducts marine research in Primorsko-goranska County

During June, July and September 2013, the Sunce Association participated in the research activities of the MedMPAnet project, which was developed to enhance the conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity and the creation of an ecologically connected network of protected coastal and marine areas.

In the selected areas of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (Susak, Unije, Srakane, Krk, Prvić, Goli otok, Grgur, Rab), we conducted the first systematic inventory and mapping of marine species and habitats and a study of Posidonia oceanica conservation status. This is the basis for future research, all with the aim of improving the implementation of the SPA/BD protocol and fulfilling the Republic of Croatia’s obligations towards the European Union in terms of monitoring the situation and reporting based on the EU Habitats Directive.

The Regional Project Coordinator is the Center for Regional Activities for Specially Protected Areas (RACs/SPAs) from Tunisia and Croatian Partners, Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection and the Countries Institute for Nature Protection. The project is designed to help build monitoring capacity and enable the collection of relevant data for better managed coastal and marine protected areas and for future NATURA 2000 marine areas.

Photographs of our activities and submarines during these terrains can be seen on Sunce’s Facebook page.
