Sunce will continue its activities in 2025, engaging students in service-learning (SL). Let us recall that service-learning is a form of teaching in which students participate in activities beneficial to society, most often within a civil society organization. This makes service-learning much more than just professional internships, as students, in addition to gaining practical knowledge and skills, develop a sense of belonging to the community and contributing to society.
Sunce has been working on the topic of service-learning since 2011, and we have also established an Office for Service-Learning.
The purpose of the office is to provide information to interested students about the possibilities of implementing service-learning, to provide support to students and teachers, and to further network for the implementation of activities and projects aimed at environmental protection and sustainable development.
Presentation of Sunce’s work to Faculty of science Split students
In September 2024, Sunce became a teaching base for the Faculty of Science at the University of Split. This expanded the possibilities for students to participate in service-learning beyond the existing partner faculties:
- Faculty of Chemistry and Technology,
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences,
- Faculty of Law,
- Faculty of Economics,
- Department of Marine Studies.
On the occasion of this new collaboration, the first presentation of service-learning at Faculty of Science was organized at the end of October for students, in cooperation with professors Valerija Durekić and Marija Nazlić.
Margita Radman, the head of the Education and Information Department at Sunce, presented the work of Sunce to students through its areas of operation and explained how Sunce secures its funding and implements projects, thereby contributing to the community through its achievements. She also highlighted public events and activities in which the broader community can participate.
A special emphasis was placed on the distinction between professional internships and service-learning, with a focus on how service-learning within Sunce places special attention on activities that benefit the environment and sustainable development. Additionally, students were introduced to other opportunities for involvement, such as volunteering and membership, through which they can become part of a community actively contributing to environmental protection.
Become our service-learning student and earn ECTS credits while contributing to the community
Service-learning not only enables students to gain practical knowledge and experience but also encourages them to think about the role of the individual within the community. By participating in projects focused on the environment and sustainable development, students become aware of the challenges and the importance of preserving nature for future generations.
