The “Take a ride – Split bike tour” project was created in response to climate change, traffic congestion, and the decline in quality of life in Split. The city faces a lack of green spaces, challenges in waste management, and a shortage of safe and functional cycling infrastructure.
Despite these challenges, cycling is becoming an increasingly popular choice for both residents and tourists – a healthy, eco-friendly, and practical mode of transport. This is precisely why there is a growing need for education on sustainable mobility, the circular economy, and climate change, as well as for raising awareness about the importance of investing in comprehensive transport solutions. Split bike tour is a plastic-free public event that combines sports, education, and a space for exchanging information. Through rides, workshops, and public campaigns, citizens are empowered to adopt sustainable habits, while decision-makers are encouraged to develop a safer and greener city.
Objective:
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to creating a more sustainable, healthier, and climate-resilient urban environment in Split by promoting eco-friendly forms of mobility, marking World car-free day, and encouraging civic engagement in environmental protection through public events and educational activities.
Specific objectives:
- Raising citizens’ awareness of environmentally responsible behavior through the organization of a plastic-free public event, with an emphasis on the ecological benefits of sustainable forms of transport and the harmful consequences of excessive car use, on the occasion of World car-free day.
- Empowering youth and citizens to adopt sustainable habits by promoting cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transport, alongside educational workshops in high schools and during the public event.
- Enhancing the capacity of local authorities to develop cycling infrastructure through an educational and informational campaign as part of the World car-free day activities.

1. Preparation and implementation of an educational and informational campaign

2. Educational activities for high school students and participants of the 14th Split bike tour public event
- Workshops on climate change, the consequences of traffic, and waste management
- Promoting the everyday use of bicycles
- Empowering youth to adopt sustainable habits and actively participate
- Educating bike ride visitors through information stands, games, and entertaining content
- BMX workshops and performances – promoting cycling culture and a healthy lifestyle
3. Organization and implementation of the 14th Split bike tour public event
- Plastic-free event on the occasion of World car-free day
- Bicycle ride through the city
- Information stands, music, prize games, and sports activities
- Educating citizens, visitors, and tourists about sustainable mobility and environmental protection
- Involvement of youth, educators, and volunteers in spreading knowledge
Expected project results:
- Increased citizen awareness of the importance of sustainable mobility and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Active participation of citizens in the plastic-free event and educational workshops
- Strengthening the capacity of youth for active involvement in environmental protection and the promotion of cycling
- Promoting the development of cycling infrastructure and the integration of sustainable mobility measures into urban planning
- Contributing to the implementation of the City of Split Development Strategy until 2030 in the areas of society and the urban environment
