Refill Hvar: public water taps for less waste

jelsa

Refilling your own bottle instead of buying water in single-use bottles may seem like a small thing, but it is not. By doing so, you send a message that you care about nature and the environment. Public water taps on Hvar make this easy. They provide clean, free drinking water and help people avoid single-use plastic bottles, one of the biggest sources of waste on islands like Hvar. With summer crowds, packed beaches and high consumption of bottled water, accessible drinking-water taps are more important than ever.

Stakeholder workshop on Hvar

On November 27, Sunce held a workshop on Hvar for the municipal company Jelkom d.o.o. and the Tourist Board, with the Mayor of the Municipality of Jelsa also in attendance. The results of the Refill Hvar project were presented, and it was concluded that it is important to continue educating people about environmentally friendly practices.

– As part of the project on Hvar, nine public water taps were installed. In this way, we contributed to reducing waste generation, especially single-use plastic, – emphasized Lorena Jakas, president of the association Moj škoj, the project’s lead partner.

The workshop was led by Dalka Zanki, project manager at Sunce.

– As part of the project, two clean-up actions were carried out. During one of them, we collected almost 98 kilograms of marine litter, mostly plastic, – said Zanki.

All participants agreed that continued efforts are needed to protect the environment and reduce waste. At the workshop, an additional educational activity for the local community was agreed upon, to be carried out by Sunce, further raising awareness about the benefits of using tap water and, consequently, reducing single-use plastic.

Do you carry your reusable bottle everywhere with you?

Public water taps on Hvar are installed at key locations, right where people need them most. You can find them in Jelsa, Vrboska, Zavala, and Ivan Dolac, along promenades, near beaches, and by children’s playgrounds. The fact that anyone who gets thirsty can now refill their bottle for free shows how simple and practical changes can have a truly big impact.

Every person who chooses to reuse their bottle sends a powerful message: that they care about the environment, value resources and believe that small actions can drive big changes. That is why you should always choose reusable solutions, reduce waste and protect the environment.
