As part of the project From river to the sea – let’s be plastic free, Sunce will again this summer, in collaboration with Sub-merus (Calypso DC), educate young volunteers from around the world on the importance of fight against marine pollution.

Educational program

Marine litter represents one of the world’s fastest-growing threats to marine and coastal ecosystems, with significant environmental, cultural, health and economic consequences. The greatest danger to marine environments and human health comes from large quantities of plastic.

Sunce has developed an educational program to empower youth in the fight against marine pollution. The aim of this program is to reduce the pressure of waste pollution, with a focus on plastic, in the area of the Cetina River and three Natura 2000 ecological network sites. The program consists of educational workshops that will take place during the summer months at the Sub-merus (Calypso DC) diving center in Omiš.

The activities are part of the project From river to the sea – let’s be plastic free, implemented by Sub-merus in cooperation with the Public Institution “Sea and Karst,” Impactrip and Sunce, with the support of funds from the Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed) initiative.

Volunteers

In collaboration with Impactrip, since 2018, Submerus has been implementing the Marine Conservation program, through which volunteers from around the world come to Omiš to contribute to the preservation of clean seas. So far, 350 volunteers have been trained and several tons of marine litter have been collected.

– Trained volunteers have become our valuable tool for spreading knowledge and experience on environmental and nature conservation, – said Tino Mrčelić, director of the diving center and project leader.

– In the first part of the training, volunteers will gain an understanding of marine litter and enhance their knowledge about the harmful effects of plastic. In the second part of the educational workshops, volunteers will conduct monitoring of the marine litter they have collected while diving throughout the week, thereby applying their previously acquired theoretical knowledge, – said Tea Kuzmičić Rosandić from Sunce.
