Earth Day on Split’s Riva

On Tuesday, April 30th, starting at 5.30 pm on the Split Riva there will be a celebration of Earth Day organized by the City of Split and the Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce.
The event is organized as part of the activities of the EU project “Waste is not garbage” implemented by the City of Split. The goal of marking Earth Day is to promote sustainable waste management, i.e. to promote the principle of “reduce, reuse and recycle”. Accordingly, the City of Split together with Association Sunce – which has many years of experience in celebrating Earth Day – is preparing a series of activities for citizens.
The occasional program on the Riva will present the works of students who participated in the competition in the creation of creative works from collected waste, entitled “Before and after – students for Earth Day 2019”. The competition was also organized as part of the project “Waste is not garbage” in the period from March 18, 2019 to April 30, 2019, and the invitation to participate was sent to all schools in the city of Split. As part of the program on the Riva, the winners in three categories will be announced – students of lower and upper grades of primary schools in the city of Split and high school students.
In order to make the public aware of the large amount of waste generated by reckless use of disposable or single-use items, on the stands with student work, visitors will be presented making things from worn-out materials and all interested will be able to participate in painting canvas bags.
In order to raise public awareness of the consumer lifestyle as one of the key causes of waste accumulation, poor environmental conditions and depleted natural resources, a traditional sale of used children’s equipment and toys and adult clothing will be organized. Employees and members of Association Sunce will demonstrate separate waste collection and composting, and appropriate information materials for citizens and games for the youngest will be promoted.
The goal of the project “Waste is not garbage” is to educate citizens about sustainable waste management. The project will ensure the production of informational and educational leaflets and brochures for citizens, plays for children, education, workshops, television and radio shows and radio spots, application development, websites and banner advertising on Internet portals, as well as animated films and videos.
Part of the project are public forums for citizens on sustainable waste management, which will be held in city districts and local committees. The first public forum will be held on April 23 in the City District of Lokve, starting at 18.00, and we hereby invite you to respond in as many numbers as possible. For the exact dates of the forums in the city districts, don’t forget to look at the Facebook page of the Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce.

The project was co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund. The total value of the project is HRK 2,861,524.75, and the number of grants awarded to the City of Split is HRK 2,325,521.78.
