From Macedonia to Croatia: Sergej’s green journey

Sergej_ESS_volonter

This month, we welcomed a new volunteer from the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), Sergej Sarchevski from Macedonia. With his knowledge and skills, he will undoubtedly enrich our work and help us bring positive changes to the local community. Sunce has been accredited for the implementation of this program since 2015, and every year we host two or three international volunteers for a long-term 12-month volunteering activity.

A new call for ESC volunteers will be announced soon, open to all interested applicants. In the meantime, learn more about Sergej!

Hello, my name is Sergej Sarchevski. I am 25 years old, and I come from Skopje. I completed my photography studies in London, and my previous professional experience in the field includes working as a director of photography on commercials and short films. My journey has brought me to Split to volunteer with the Sunce association, and I am very excited about it. In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Photography is both my profession and my hobby.

Why Sunce?

I learnt about Sunce from my friend and colleague Milijana, who is already volunteering here. I wanted a change of scenery and a break from Skopje, and Sunce particularly attracted me because I want to deepen my knowledge of ecology and sustainable development while expanding my social circle. So far, I have participated in two Sunce activities: a Swap Fair and the VERA conference. I attended these events as a photographer, and my engagement at Sunce will mostly be within the communications department as a photographer/videographer. Both activities have been very interesting, and I am looking forward to future ones. I find environmental topics fascinating, and I have previously worked on a project in Skopje for the TV show Ekosvest, which focuses on sustainable development. This connection drew me to Sunce.

How do you spend your free time?

I work out at the gym, walk through the old town…

Fun fact about Sergej

I love quirky socks because they break the monotony. The best ones are completely different from the outfit. Unfortunately, I do own a few plain white socks, but most of them are fun and colorful.

What do you think of Split so far?

I haven’t been here long, but Split is fantastic. Unlike Skopje, the air is clean, the weather is amazing, and the city is generally tidy and well-maintained, which I really like. Since I haven’t been here for very long, Split and I are still getting to know each other, but so far, it’s phenomenal.

Do you miss Skopje?

For now, I am very happy in Split, and I don’t miss Skopje at all. I’m having a great time here and looking forward to the upcoming period and my volunteer work. As we would say in Macedonia, ćukni vo drvo—knock on wood!
