Earth Day 2018 Sunce Program

Association Sunce in cooperation with the utility company Čistoća d.o.o. from Split has been participating in the celebration of Earth Day for the seventh year in a row. This year’s world theme is “Plastic Waste Reduction”. Accordingly, all of our activities included in the Earth Day program this year have two themes, which are directly related to our latest projects that we reported on earlier.

– Reduction of plastic waste – waste in the sea! # Participate in Sustainable Development

This year’s program consists of:

Public event on the waterfront on Sunday, April 22, 2018 starting at 9 a.m. The goal of the public event, which has been part of our Department for Education and Information for many years, is to facilitate access to information for citizens aimed at encouraging the adoption of more sustainable practices in everyday life and involving citizens in efforts to achieve greater sustainability of our local community. In addition to access to information, this is a public event, an opportunity for our fellow citizens and their families to participate in several workshops, such as painting canvas bags with our EVS volunteers from Macedonia and other Sunce employees, but also in the second hand sale of children’s equipment. We are sure that everyone will find something for themselves.

Public event on the Riva waterfront- April 22, 2018.

Exactly on the date of Earth Day 22.4. we organize a special program at the “end of Marmontova”, ie at the beginning of the waterfront on the west side. The program starts at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. and is tailored to all ages, from children to their grandparents.

The program includes three thematic workshops / counters set in the shape of a triangle with the aim of presenting, informing and educating the public about the importance of sustainable waste management on a personal and social level, and symbolically linked to three key principles: REDUCE, USE, RECYCLE!

Planned workshops and counters:

  1. Cloth bag decorating workshop (DIY counter) – PRINCIPLE OF REDUCING,

  2. Sale of used children’s equipment – THE PRINCIPLE OF USING again

  3. Info desk on proper separate waste collection – RECYCLING PRINCIPLE.

In addition to the public event on Riva, we also organized a competition for the best class project related to the topic of waste and the principles of responsible waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle for the occasion of Earth Day. We chose this year’s theme guided by the global theme of Planet Earth Day which was plastic. But, wanting to make as many people as possible aware of the problems caused by the growing amount of plastic in the sea, we connected these two topics. Therefore, in their projects, the students linked the problem of excessive use of plastic and its inadequate treatment to the problems it causes when it reaches the marine ecosystem.

The competition was divided into three categories for students from 1st to 4th grade, students from 5th to 8th grade and students from 1st to 4th grade of high schools. This year, 11 primary schools applied for the competition, of which 5 class projects in the category of lower grades (from 1st to 4th), and 6 class projects of higher grades (from 5th to 8th) of primary schools. Two high schools were also reported.

We are currently in the process of reviewing classroom projects, which have already thrilled and made us crazy. In order for all participants in the competition to get acquainted with the works of their colleagues, on April 25 at 12 o’clock at a special ceremony in the Cinematheque Golden Gate, all class projects will be presented and as well as awards for the winning classes.
