Are you a primary school staff member in the Split-Dalmatia County? Do you envision your schoolyard as a place where students learn, connect, and enjoy nature? Association Sunce is giving you the opportunity to turn that vision into reality. In celebration of Earth Day, we’re launching a competition that could bring your school financial support to redesign its outdoor space in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way.

DesirMED: nature-based solutions

This competition is part of the DesirMED project, which recognizes nature-based solutions (NbS) as key to climate change adaptation and improving quality of life in urban areas. As the name suggests, nature-based solutions are interventions that use nature and the natural functions of healthy ecosystems to address climate-related challenges. These are not simply actions aimed at reducing human impact, like cutting down on waste.

We’re looking for creative ideas that blend nature and functionality. Showcase your creativity by designing your school’s outdoor space using nature-based solutions and sustainable, eco-friendly elements. For example:

  • increasing greenery can help manage temperature
  • planting flowers can boost biodiversity
  • collecting rainwater can reduce water consumption.

Let students play an active role in the process and show how small changes can make a big difference!

Awards and deadlines

The top three ideas will receive awards, with a total prize fund of €12,000 for the Earth Day 2025 competition. Through the DesirMED project, two schools will receive financial support to bring their projects to life, while a third winning school will be invited to participate in an educational workshop.

Applications are open until April 4, 2025. To apply, simply send your idea to [email protected]. If you need more information or want the full application guidelines, feel free to write to us or call us at +385 21 360 779.

Protecting the environment for Earth Day

To mark Earth Day, we want to encourage as many schools as possible to become more environmentally conscious and actively engaged in environmental protection. Beyond the chance to enhance and green your school, participating in this competition brings many other benefits. Students will learn how small ecological actions can lead to long-term positive impacts, they’ll develop teamwork skills, and gain a hands-on understanding of sustainability. And if your school wins the chance to redesign its outdoor area, it could become an inspiration and model for others looking to introduce green changes to their own environments.

We look forward to your applications and believe that your project can truly contribute to environmental preservation, sustainable development, and ecological education for your students!
