Every year on July 28, World nature conservation day is observed<\/strong>, reminding us of the vital importance of natural resources for our lives. At a time when climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss are becoming ever greater challenges, each of us can contribute to protecting nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer is the perfect opportunity to do so. Whether we are swimming, diving, sailing, or exploring islands, we can see firsthand just how valuable our sea is, and how vulnerable it is to human pressures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are five simple ideas for how you can celebrate World Nature Conservation Day this week, even while on holiday, without making major sacrifices but with a meaningful impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Experience a free Sunce projection in Komi\u017ea<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

If you are on the island of Vis or nearby, make sure to visit Komi\u017ea on July 30<\/strong>. From 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.<\/strong>, the facade of the Fishermen\u2019s Museum (Komuna) will host a free light projection of the Sunce<\/a>, “Voice of the Sea \u2013 <\/strong>Posidonia oceanica<\/strong><\/em>” (<\/strong>BIOPRESSADRIA<\/strong><\/a>)<\/strong>, accompanied by the audiovisual story “Adriatic Treasures” (ASPEH<\/a>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These immersive experiences will take you on a journey through diverse marine habitats and introduce you to the remarkable species that inhabit them. Discover how rich and at the same time how fragile the underwater world truly is. From mysterious underwater caves and seagrass meadows to the open sea, seabirds, and coastal habitats, the projections remind us that every species matters and every habitat plays a role in maintaining the delicate balance of marine life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the light show, the Sunce team will be there to talk with visitors about the current state of the sea and how each of us can help protect it. Curious visitors will also have the chance to win small prizes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Report marine species sightings and become a citizen scientist<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Have you spotted a dolphin while swimming? Seen an unusual jellyfish, a sea turtle, or a plant you couldn’t identify?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These observations can be extremely valuable to scientists. The sea is changing faster than ever, and researchers can no longer monitor every change in the Adriatic on their own. That is why citizen science<\/strong> – the collaboration between citizens and scientists in collecting data about nature<\/a>, has become one of the key tools for marine conservation. Citizen observations help experts track environmental changes, monitor the spread of invasive species, and assess the condition of threatened organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, numerous digital platforms such as iNaturalist<\/strong>, BioAtlas<\/strong>, and specialized reporting applications (for example, for the endangered noble pen shell<\/a>) make participation easy. All you need is a photograph and a few minutes of your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citizen science is more than data collection. It connects people with nature and transforms observers into active participants in conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the international BIOPRESSADRIA<\/a><\/strong> project, we also organized the professional training programme “Citizens \u2013 Observers of the Adriatic Sea<\/a>“<\/strong>, demonstrating how everyone who loves the sea can become an important ally in preserving the Adriatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Notice an environmental problem? Report it anonymously through the Green Phone<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Summer means spending more time at beaches, in bays, and at sea. Unfortunately, this is also when many environmental problems become more visible, including illegal coastal landfilling, littering, marine pollution, habitat destruction, and improper anchoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These environmental issues threaten one of our fundamental human rights, the right to a clean, healthy, and safe environment<\/strong>. This is a right we can only protect if we all take responsibility for the places where we live. That is why we encourage you to report environmental problems through the Green Phone<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you notice an environmental issue, there is no need to wait until you return home or search for the appropriate authority. The quickest way is to send a photograph along with a short description<\/strong> of the problem, including the location and time, via the Sunce association’s Facebook<\/a> or Instagram<\/a> chat. You can also submit your report through the online reporting form.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving your report, our legal team will provide legal support, submit reports to the relevant authorities when necessary, and keep you informed about the next steps. Your identity remains known only to us. In all official procedures, Sunce acts as the reporting organization, so you can safely submit reports directly from your personal social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a member of Croatia’s Green Phone network, Sunce covers the Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovnik-Neretva counties<\/strong>. Information about organizations responsible for other counties is available online.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Take home memories, not natural souvenirs<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Shells, pebbles, and sand may seem like the perfect holiday souvenirs<\/a>. However, what appears to us to be something nature has left behind actually plays an important role in supporting natural coastal processes and sustaining both living and non-living ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empty shells become homes for hermit crabs and other organisms, while stones and sand help protect beaches from erosion. Many sandy beaches also provide essential nesting habitats for loggerhead sea turtles and numerous bird species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When millions of tourists each take “just one shell” every year, the cumulative impact becomes significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave natural souvenirs where they belong<\/a>, in nature and instead take home photographs<\/strong>. Today, photography is not only a way to preserve memories but also a powerful tool for documenting nature, inspiring others, and encouraging conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Support Sunce and help nature gain more allies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nature conservation does not happen on its own. Behind every resolved environmental report, educational programme, awareness campaign, and proposal for protecting new natural areas are dedicated people working every day to safeguard the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
