Research shows that children who develop an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from an early age are better equipped to understand the world around them, develop critical thinking skills, and acquire the competencies needed to actively participate in modern society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particular emphasis is placed on introducing science to children in an <strong>engaging, practical, and interactive way<\/strong>. When a child reaches conclusions through experiments, workshops, or investigative activities, knowledge is not acquired as a dry piece of information but becomes a lasting experience. Such an approach fosters curiosity, creativity, and independent thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parents as the First Promoters of Scientific Thinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Children are often described as <strong>\u201cborn scientists\u201d<\/strong> because they naturally explore, ask questions, and experiment in order to understand the world around them. Everyday situations, such as a child observing liquid evaporating while a parent is cooking, demonstrate how curiosity naturally leads to investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, scientific literacy is <strong>not an innate skill<\/strong>; it is developed through learning. It includes the ability to ask questions, seek answers, and <strong>understand information and evaluate its reliability<\/strong>. In today\u2019s digital environment, where information is abundant and often unverified, this skill is especially important. Through play, conversation, and everyday activities, they can encourage the development of scientific ways of thinking. Activities such as <strong>cooking, exploring light and shadows, or building structures<\/strong> can become opportunities to learn basic scientific concepts. This approach promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and curiosity-driven questioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Science Be Brought Closer to Children?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts emphasize that <strong>parents do not need to be scientific experts<\/strong> to introduce science to their children. It is enough to transform everyday situations into small moments of discovery. Explaining everyday phenomena and encouraging children to observe their surroundings are key steps in developing scientific literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children can be offered simple <strong>activities<\/strong> that involve experimentation, discussion, and exploration. Through play and everyday experiences, basic scientific concepts can be introduced while helping children better understand the world around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" data-id=\"38745\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-10.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-10-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" data-id=\"38739\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-7.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-7-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of Activities Include:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hands-on experimentation:<\/strong><br>Children can investigate which objects sink and which float by testing different items in water, introducing the concept of buoyancy. They can also observe how ice melts under the influence of salt, heat, or sunlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vocabulary development:<\/strong><br>Using comparisons such as big\u2013small, rough\u2013smooth, or hot\u2013cold helps children develop observation and descriptive skills. Describing actions with scientific terms further strengthens understanding (e.g., \u201cYou pushed the cart with a great force.\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open-ended questions:<\/strong><br>Questions such as \u201cWhat do you think will happen if we mix these colors?\u201d, \u201cWhy do you think that will happen?\u201d, \u201cHow do you think it will happen?\u201d, or \u201cIf we add or remove something, will it change the outcome?\u201d encourage prediction, analysis, and critical thinking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Observation tools:<\/strong><br>Introducing simple measuring tools such as magnifying glasses, rulers, or thermometers helps children develop observation and investigation skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning through nature:<\/strong><br>Observing the changing seasons, taking nature walks, and collecting natural materials enable children to better understand the environment and the changes that occur within it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The STEM Approach and Environmental Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we face the reality of warming seas and increasingly polluted rivers, the need for knowledge and innovation becomes ever greater. Future generations will be the ones confronting these challenges and seeking science-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, the project <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/sailing-into-stem-a-map-for-2030\/stem-workshops-and-training-programs-2026-calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/sailing-into-stem-a-map-for-2030\/stem-workshops-and-training-programs-2026-calendar\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cLet\u2019s Sail Through STEM Waters \u2013 A Ticket to 2030\u201d<\/a> was launched to introduce children to natural sciences through interactive workshops and public events. Topics such as marine litter, eutrophication, coastal land reclamation, and ocean acidification are transformed into opportunities for exploration and experiential learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Through Experience and Understanding Misconceptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the learning process, children often develop so-called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/victory-over-misconceptions-with-assoc-prof-dr-milo-bulic\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/victory-over-misconceptions-with-assoc-prof-dr-milo-bulic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misconceptions<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; incorrect or incomplete understandings of scientific phenomena. These are a natural part of learning, as children attempt to explain the world based on their own experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, when discussing microplastics, children often believe that plastic completely disappears, when in reality it breaks down into <strong>tiny particles that remain in the environment<\/strong>. Similarly, students often fail to connect increased atmospheric CO\u2082 concentrations and global warming with ocean acidification, and may not understand how changes in the atmosphere can affect marine life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" data-id=\"38741\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-8.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-8-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" data-id=\"38735\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-5.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/znanstvena_pismenost_stem-5-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To help students overcome such misconceptions, we use simple experiments and examples from everyday life. One example involves <strong>observing a seashell immersed in vinegar<\/strong>. Over time, students notice that the shell\u2019s surface changes and gradually dissolves due to the acid. Through this activity, they more easily understand how increased ocean acidity can affect organisms that build their shells and skeletons from calcium carbonate, such as shellfish and corals. In this way, scientific concepts become more concrete and connected to real environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scientific Literacy as the Foundation of a Responsible Society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiential learning encourages the development of <strong>critical thinking, questioning, and a deeper understanding<\/strong> of natural processes.
