The event brought together representatives of the local community and the association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/udrugamojskoj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moj \u0161koj<\/a>, a volunteer member of Sunce\u2019s volunteer club <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/udruga.sunce.split\/posts\/pfbid0RSnhn5XzmpMMhbjbjUfUR55qBanVW2KMV5FHBhT5sh6Di7bjB836dscZwqLBhzEDl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SoleSTerra<\/a>, as well as students participating in professional practice and community service learning at Sunce.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_Refill_Hvar_akcija_ciscenja.jpg\" alt=\"marine-litter\" class=\"wp-image-32382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_Refill_Hvar_akcija_ciscenja.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_Refill_Hvar_akcija_ciscenja-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_Refill_Hvar_akcija_ciscenja-500x667.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Sunce, as a project partner, recognized the value of this initiative, which contributes to the long-term reduction of plastic waste, &#8211; said <strong>Dalka Zanki<\/strong>, project manager at Sunce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The importance of the project lies in raising awareness among island residents and visitors about the significance of individual actions in reducing everyday plastic waste, &#8211; emphasized <strong>Lorena Jakas<\/strong>, president of the association Moj \u0161koj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did we find on Zaca Beach?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of <strong>97.9 kg<\/strong> of marine litter was removed from the marine environment through joint efforts. In accordance with the Protocol for implementing marine and coastal cleanup actions in the Republic of Croatia, waste monitoring was also conducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zaca Beach \u201ctreated\u201d us to a variety of marine litter \u2014 some items made us smile, others caused serious concern, and all the collected waste served as a strong reminder of the negative impact of plastic on the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_morski_otpad_Hvar-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_morski_otpad_Hvar-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_morski_otpad_Hvar-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_morski_otpad_Hvar-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_morski_otpad_Hvar-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Sunce_morski_otpad_Hvar.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The direct impact of humans is especially visible on urban beaches, as confirmed by the <strong>large amount of plastic toys<\/strong> we recorded this time, &#8211; said <strong>Zanki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As usual, <strong>most of the marine litter was plastic, totaling 82.21 kg<\/strong>. Discarded fishing gear was also spotted, including a shellfish farming frame. The largest item removed from the beach was part of an old refrigerator. Plastic bottles account for an alarming 20\u201330% of packaging waste and consumer habits show that bottled water is a top purchase among visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; We want to encourage tourists to use reusable bottles. That\u2019s why, as part of the project, we will install nine public water fountains with drinking water from local sources, &#8211; said <strong>Bianka Jakas<\/strong>, project manager.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/DIEF_Hvar_Moj_skoj_Sunce.jpg\" alt=\"moj-skoj-javna-spina\" class=\"wp-image-32398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/DIEF_Hvar_Moj_skoj_Sunce.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/DIEF_Hvar_Moj_skoj_Sunce-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/DIEF_Hvar_Moj_skoj_Sunce-500x667.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Visitors will be informed about the fountain locations through an awareness campaign, including a promotional video shown on ferry and catamaran lines from Split to Jelsa on Hvar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; We believe that thanks to this project, visitors to Hvar will appreciate our natural resources even more, especially the abundance of clean drinking water, &#8211; said <strong>Antonia Grgi\u010devi\u0107<\/strong> from the association Moj \u0161koj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New cleanup actions, education and cooperation with the local community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also includes educational activities for local stakeholders and visitors. &#8211; Sunce will organize another cleanup action, and we are planning meetings with representatives of the Municipality of Jelsa, the utility company Jelkom d.o.o., and the Jelsa Tourist Board, &#8211; announced <strong>Zanki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; We invite all residents and guests on the island of Hvar to stop buying plastic water bottles.
