{"id":31434,"date":"2025-04-04T14:17:59","date_gmt":"2025-04-04T12:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/?p=31434"},"modified":"2025-05-21T15:42:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T13:42:43","slug":"how-close-is-dugi-otok-to-environmental-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/integrated-waste-reduction-strategies-and-solutions-in-protected-and-natura-2000-areas-wastereduce\/how-close-is-dugi-otok-to-environmental-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"How close is Dugi Otok to environmental sustainability?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For all stakeholders of the protected areas of Dugi Otok, we organized, in cooperation with the public institutions <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/naturazadar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natura Jadera<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/telascica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park<\/a><\/em>, a workshop titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/udruga.sunce.split\/posts\/pfbid02Y6NsfDh2m71VEPKpEXqLzuUy8wdGXSRbV7yKKNj4PuKVXG4dpPUb4dQSfcYMzk7rl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steps towards an environmentally sustainable Dugi Otok \u2013 replace plastic with sustainable solutions.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Sunce is committed to reducing the use of single-use plastics in the protected areas of Dugi Otok through the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/plastic-free-croatian-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plastic-Free Croatian Island<\/a><\/em> project, and to decreasing waste production under the <em>Interreg <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/projects\/integrated-waste-reduction-strategies-and-solutions-in-protected-and-natura-2000-areas-wastereduce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WASTEREDUCE<\/a><\/em> project,\u201d- said <strong>Dalka Zanki<\/strong>, project manager at Sunce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Together for the protection of Dugi Otok\u2019s nature and environment<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, held in Zadar on March 10th this year, was attended by representatives of businesses operating within the protected areas of Dugi Otok, Tela\u0161\u0107ica and Sakarun, representatives from <em>Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park<\/em>, the <em>Natura Jadera<\/em> public institution, and the Municipality of Sali. The workshop attracted further interest, with additional attendees from the University of Zadar, the City of Zadar, Zadar County, and public institutions such as <em>Paklenica National Park<\/em> and <em>Vransko Lake Nature Park<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_DIEF_plastic_free_Dugi_otok-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_DIEF_plastic_free_Dugi_otok-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_DIEF_plastic_free_Dugi_otok-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_DIEF_plastic_free_Dugi_otok-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_DIEF_plastic_free_Dugi_otok-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_DIEF_plastic_free_Dugi_otok.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Such stakeholder education sessions are essential and should be held regularly,- said <strong>Damir Mari\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, a representative of <em>Ilirija d.o.o.<\/em>, a company that brings guests from Biograd na Moru to <em>Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from <em>Tela\u0161\u0107ica<\/em> and <em>Natura Jadera<\/em> public institutions agreed that the collaboration of all stakeholders is crucial in addressing the issue of marine waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Every year, in cooperation with diving clubs, local residents, and institutions, we organize coastal and seabed cleanup actions,- emphasized <strong>Vesna Pete\u0161i\u0107<\/strong>, head of the project preparation and implementation department at <em>Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Natura Jadera is working on developing cooperation with local residents, businesses, the municipality, and the tourist board. The decision prescribes mandatory measures for businesses, including replacing single-use plastic items with reusable alternatives, setting up containers for separate waste collection, and clearly communicating these measures to all stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The decision contains mandatory and recommended measures, such as the gradual replacement of plastic bags with cloth or paper alternatives, and the procurement of beverages in returnable packaging,- explained <strong>Pete\u0161i\u0107<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pete\u0161i\u0107 also noted that the decision includes penalties for violators, such as the potential <strong>termination of concession agreements and revocation of maritime domain permits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Damir Peri\u0107<\/strong>, director of <em>Natura Jadera<\/em>, stated that the decision will be applied when issuing new concession approvals for service providers in the protected landscape area \u201cNorthwestern part of Dugi Otok.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunce has been involved for years in Dugi Otok\u2019s sustainable transformation. The <em>Plastic-Free Croatian Island<\/em> project is a continuation of the earlier <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/news\/the-action-plan-of-the-project-for-plastic-free-croatian-islands-presented-in-sali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">For Plastic-Free Croatian Islands<\/a><\/em> project. \u201cWe are pleased to continue our successful collaboration with the key stakeholders managing Dugi Otok\u2019s protected areas,\u201d said <strong>Tea Kuzmi\u010di\u0107-Rosandi\u0107<\/strong> from Sunce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reusable solutions to preserve Dugi Otok<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The first step towards a cleaner environment is certainly waste reduction, so the use of alternatives to single-use plastics is essential,- emphasized <strong>Zanki<\/strong>, who presented reusable solutions to workshop participants that could be incorporated into businesses operating within Dugi Otok\u2019s protected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_visekratna_rjesenja.jpg\" alt=\"odr\u017eivo\" class=\"wp-image-31430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_visekratna_rjesenja.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_visekratna_rjesenja-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_visekratna_rjesenja-500x667.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Reusable cups, bottles, food containers, cutlery, and cloth bags are just some examples of alternatives to commonly used disposable items in tourism activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; We have been separating plastic from mixed waste for several years and have been thinking about how to reduce the number of single-use plastic cups in the waste stream since they make up the majority,- noted <strong>Ivana \u0160krokov<\/strong>, a representative of <em>Nevika Cruise<\/em> from Pa\u0161man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_plastic_free_DIEF-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_plastic_free_DIEF-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_plastic_free_DIEF-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_plastic_free_DIEF-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_plastic_free_DIEF-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sunce_plastic_free_DIEF.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All businesses agreed that regulating waste generation is necessary in order to reduce pollution in the Adriatic Sea. A <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/news\/do-you-know-how-much-single-use-plastic-is-generated-by-tourism-activities-in-the-protected-areas-of-dugi-otok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey on the use of single-use plastics in business operations<\/a> was conducted last summer among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The data we obtained from the survey analysis served as the basis for the proposal of the decision by the Sunce association, which was then adopted by the management board of <em>Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park<\/em>,- explained <strong>Zanki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mari\u010di\u0107<\/strong> emphasized that replacing single-use plastics with other materials is a commitment he personally adopted at <em>Ilirija<\/em>, despite the challenges posed by organizing excursions and onboard conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are visitors aware of the importance of environmental protection?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of the Adriatic attracts more and more visitors each year, but are they aware of the pressure that over-tourism puts on nature and the environment? This is precisely the focus of the Interreg <em>WASTEREDUCE<\/em> project research that Sunce is conducting with other Croatian and Italian partners.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"sakarun-plastic-free-croatian-island-sunce\" class=\"wp-image-28224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Last summer, Sunce studied the habits of visitors to Sakarun, one of the most beautiful Adriatic beaches \u2013 A total of<strong> one hundred Sakarun visitors completed a survey about their waste disposal habits<\/strong>, with the goal of mapping visitor habits, behaviors, and opinions on beach infrastructure and waste management on Dugi Otok,-  said <strong>Zanki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to educate visitors about preserving the natural beauty that attracts them to these destinations in the first place\u2014and businesses play a crucial role in this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; We have placed stickers in several locations on the boat warning that throwing waste into the sea is prohibited,- said <strong>\u0160krokov<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; According to research conducted by <em>Natura Jadera<\/em> in collaboration with the University of Zadar since 2018, Sakarun Bay is extremely polluted with waste, which is why <em>Natura Jadera<\/em> carries out visitor awareness campaigns,- emphasized <strong>Ba\u010di\u0107<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Waste management challenges<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Every positive change in society starts with the individual. That is why Sunce focuses on raising environmental awareness and, through <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/news\/can-split-go-plastic-free-at-public-events-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocacy efforts<\/a>, seeks to reduce waste generation, with a particular emphasis on single-use plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a survey Sunce conducted last summer among Dugi Otok <strong>concessionaires,<\/strong> <strong>most of them (79%) do separate waste<\/strong>\u2014specifically plastic, glass, and metal returnable packaging. However, 21% of respondents stated they do not separate waste because there is no separate waste disposal on the island, and they see no point in separating it when it all ends up at the same landfill anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1.jpg\" alt=\"sakarun\" class=\"wp-image-28231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1-500x667.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>\u0160krokov<\/strong> confirmed this: \u201cLast summer on Pa\u0161man, separately disposed plastic wasn&#8217;t collected for over a month, and later we heard that all the waste, including the plastic, ended up at the same landfill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be a part of the change<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Be part of the change\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/join-in\/become-a-member\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">join<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/join-in\/volunteer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">volunteer<\/a> in Sunce!
