{"id":28239,"date":"2024-10-14T14:23:16","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T12:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/?p=28239"},"modified":"2025-02-07T14:29:41","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T13:29:41","slug":"do-you-know-how-much-single-use-plastic-is-generated-by-tourism-activities-in-the-protected-areas-of-dugi-otok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/news\/do-you-know-how-much-single-use-plastic-is-generated-by-tourism-activities-in-the-protected-areas-of-dugi-otok\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you know how much single-use plastic is generated by tourism activities in the protected areas of Dugi Otok?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/projekti\/plastic-free-croatian-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plastic-Free Croatian Island<\/a> project, <strong>we conducted a survey<\/strong> among concessionaires operating in the Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park and in the northern part of Dugi otok, in the Sakarun area, on the <strong>use of single-use plastics in their business<\/strong> in order to reduce plastic waste in protected areas. At the end of August, catching the last waves of the high tourist season, we met tired but smiling tourism workers engaged in various activities &#8211; from organizing excursions, catering to selling souvenirs and transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-survey-implementation\"><strong>Survey implementation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 The data we obtained from the analysis of the survey results will serve as a basis for determining and adopting a Decision to restrict the use of single-use plastics in protected areas \u2013 said <strong>Dalka Zanki<\/strong>, project manager. She added that the positive cooperation with the Municipality of Sali, the utility company Muli\u0107 d.o.o., tourist boards and the public institutions Natura Jadera and PP Teal\u0161\u0107ica will contribute to further steps to reduce the use of single-use plastics in the tourism sector, especially since we now have feedback from concessionaires who are also striving for change. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/plastic_free_croatian_island_sunce.png\" alt=\"plastic-free-croatian -island-sunce\" class=\"wp-image-28216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/plastic_free_croatian_island_sunce.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/plastic_free_croatian_island_sunce-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/plastic_free_croatian_island_sunce-500x667.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A total of 31 concessionaires completed the survey, of which 21 concessionaires from the area managed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/telascica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tela\u0161\u0107ica Nature Park Public Institution<\/a> and ten concessionaires from the Dugi Otok area managed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/naturazadar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natura Jadera Public Institution<\/a>. All concessionaires perform tourism activities including organized tourist boat trips, catering and service activities, nautical services and land transport services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Of course we are concerned about the state of nature and the environment, the attractiveness of this area ensures our existence &#8211; claim the concessionaires when asked about the state of waste management on Dugi otok. Related to this, 26 concessionaires answered that <strong>they regularly warn their guests not to pollute the environment and to properly dispose of their waste.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_plastic_free_croatian_island.png\" alt=\"plastic-free-croatian-island-sunce\" class=\"wp-image-28214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_plastic_free_croatian_island.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_plastic_free_croatian_island-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_plastic_free_croatian_island-500x667.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-survey-results\">Survey results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waste-management-on-dugi-otok\"><strong>Waste management on Dugi otok<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis of the survey responses shows that concessionaires are generally dissatisfied with the existing waste management system. More than 74% of respondents stated that they were not satisfied with the way waste is collected and disposed of. Service providers in campsites were particularly critical, pointing out the problem of waste collection in campsites where even properly separated waste is later disposed of and transported from the island as mixed waste. <strong>The majority of concessionaires do separate waste, 79% of them separate plastic, glass and metal returnable packaging.<\/strong> We must emphasize that the majority of concessionaires are shipowners who bring their guests from Zadar, Biograd na Moru, Pretr\u010dane, Ugljan and Pa\u0161man. These concessionaires do not leave their waste on Dugi Otok, but transport it back to their ports. Although 39% of respondents do not use single-use plastics, <strong>the majority (61%) still use it in large quantities<\/strong>. Tourist boats, beach restaurants and campsites consume significant amounts of plastic packaging every day. Among the reasons for continuing to use plastic, concessionaires highlighted technical obstacles such as the lack of infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; We in Sakarun have neither electricity nor hot water. We are powered by our own generators, we do not have the possibility to wash reusable glasses &#8211; we were told by all the restaurateurs who operate on one of the most famous beaches of the Adriatic. They add that they largely depend on suppliers who have more affordable prices for single-use plastic items.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"sakarun-plastic-free-croatian-island-sunce\" class=\"wp-image-28224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_sakarun_plastic_free_croatian_island.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It can be assumed that the quantities of disposable plastic discarded, given the tourist demand, are extremely large. Only half of the concessionaires gave us an answer to the question of how many disposable plastic cups they use per day, and the approximate answer was that it is about <strong>100 to 200 cups per day<\/strong> and one to four large full bags for municipal waste. Some of them are already using alternative solutions, such as metal straws or offering the option to pick up orders in their own food and beverage containers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_dief_koncesionari.png\" alt=\"plastic-free-croatian-island-sunce\" class=\"wp-image-28220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_dief_koncesionari.png 600w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_dief_koncesionari-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunce_dugi_otok_dief_koncesionari-500x667.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Over <strong>93% of respondents said they were willing to reduce their use of single-use plastics<\/strong> and introduce alternative solutions such as paper or reusable cups, plates and take-out containers.
