{"id":32286,"date":"2025-05-08T11:28:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T09:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/?page_id=32286"},"modified":"2025-08-28T13:42:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:42:32","slug":"mediterranean-posidonia-network","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/about-sunce\/networks\/mediterranean-posidonia-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Mediterranean Posidonia Network"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Mediterranean Posidonia Network<\/strong> was established in 2019 following the EU meeting <em>Anchors Away<\/em>, held in Athens, Greece. The meeting brought together diverse stakeholders to address the issue of unregulated anchoring of boats on <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> seagrass meadows across the Mediterranean. It was there that the idea for the network was born: to ensure continued collaboration among stakeholders in protecting Posidonia meadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the <strong>Mediterranean Posidonia Networ<\/strong>k counts around 60 members \u2013 including representatives from the European Commission and relevant authorities, scientists and experts, marine protected area managers, as well as NGOs, shipping agencies, and marinas \u2013 from 15 countries. The network is coordinated by the <strong>French Biodiversity Agency<\/strong> (OFB), the <strong>Balearic Islands Government<\/strong>, <strong>RAC\/SPA<\/strong>, <strong>WW<\/strong>F, <strong>IUCN Me<\/strong>d, <strong>MedPAN<\/strong>, <strong>Whitesand Solutions, and Blue Seeds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MPN-logo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MPN-logo-1.jpg 488w, https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MPN-logo-1-408x300.jpg 408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Posidonia meadows are declining at an alarming rate due to <strong>human activities<\/strong> and <strong>climate change<\/strong>. Since healthy <em>Posidonia<\/em> meadows and thriving marine ecosystems are vital to all of us, we must work together to protect them from extinction. Everyone can become a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SUNCE_letak_FINAL_za-web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Posidonia keeper<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To protect and preserve <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em>, network members work together on:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>monitoring the status of seagrass meadows and the pressures they face, with a focus on anchoring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developing new, or strengthening existing, legal frameworks to better regulate <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/news\/how-does-free-anchoring-affect-the-adriatic-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free anchoring<\/a> in Mediterranean countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>establishing <a href=\"https:\/\/sunce-st.org\/en\/news\/environmentally-friendly-anchorages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmentally friendly anchorages<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>raising awareness at local, national, and international levels about the importance of protecting <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunce has been an active member <\/strong>of this network from the very beginning.
