108 Calls to our Green Phone in 2018

How many calls? Which categories? How much of it was resolved?

We’re bringing you our Green Phone Work Report for the first half of 2018.

Green phone is a free tool that provides information and advice to citizens and makes it easier to solve environmental problems in their local environments.

ZT has a unique number for the whole of Croatia 072 / 123-456, and calls from Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovačko-Neretvanska County are redirected to the Sunnce Association.

The green telephone has the task of informing and educating the public and affecting the competent local, regional and state authorities for more effective and conscientious treatment in order to preserve and protect the environment and nature.

In the first half of the year of 2018, the Green Phone line in ranged 108 times. Out of 108 applications, 69 have been solved so far, while the rest of the applications received are being resolved in the second half of the year. In this period, cases of previous years have been resolved.

Traditionally, top of the ladder represent calls for waste and a illegal construction that make up more than 70% of the applications received.
Accordingly, the focus of the work in 2018. was precisely these two categories.

Throughout January, February and March we realized a Facebook media campaign where we educated the public about the importance of proper waste separation, successful examples of good waste management in the Republic of Croatia and the world, the deficiencies of the waste management system in the county, and we participated in a public discussion on the draft waste management plan the city of Split. Our comments on the Split City Waste Management Plan as part of the Facebook campaign have encouraged citizens to engage in public debate and raise awareness about the importance of proper waste management in the city and the county. We also participated in a series of public forums in Split on waste management for the purpose of educating and informing the public.

The period from March to early July  was marked by our work within the category of illegal construction, where the applications received were related to the sealing of the sea and the sea coast with construction material. Such procedures have generally been carried out without the necessary approvals, and more coordinated supervision of inspection services is needed in order to more effectively protect the maritime good, the flora and fauna in the sea and the external environment of the coast. The applications received were related to a number of places along the coast and to the islands in the Split-Dalmatia County. This problem was also highlighted at the meeting organized by the Ombudsman of the Republic of Croatia when we emphasized the need for more effective protection and better enforcement of legal mechanisms by the competent authorities. We will continue work on this topic in the second part of 2018, as well.
