Young students volunteers repaired 100 m of drywall in the Krka National Park

In the week of volunteering and on the occasion of the European Park Day on Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26, 2018, at the entrance to the Krka National Park in Lozovac, the first student volunteer action was held as part of the project VOLUNTEER FOR NATURE, VOLUNTEER FOR YOURSELF !.

Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce, League for Addiction Prevention from Split, Ivan Lucić High School from Trogir, Center for Community Services Split, Craft Technical School from Split and Public Institution “Krka National Park” are project partners who designed and implemented a volunteer program for school volunteers “Youth in the restoration of drywall” in order to preserve cultural heritage and traditional construction, dry construction techniques, biodiversity conservation and introduction to georeferencing tools.

A total of 27 student volunteers, aged 15 to 25, under the mentorship and guidance of 15 coordinators, did a total of 324 volunteer hours and in less than two days renovated about 100 m of drywalls as part of this volunteer action.

The purpose of this program is the systematic involvement of interested individuals and groups in the activities carried out by the institution in protected areas and along the edges of the protected areas. The action program is harmonized with the Management Plan of the Public Institution “NP Krka” and designed to contribute to the protection of nature and cultural and historical heritage.

Even before the volunteer action, the volunteers participated in preparatory educational workshops, which we have already written about. In NP “Krka” they were trained by drywall masons from the Association Dragodid, and they were also introduced to the tools of work in georeferencing. Drywall belongs to the cultural goods of the Republic of Croatia and the art of drywall construction belongs to the intangible cultural good. The renovated drywall in Lozovac will remain a lasting testimony to the traditional heritage that will surround the area of the future parking lot of the main land entrance to the Krka National Park, which will be arranged as part of the Krka National Park Visitation Management Center – Lozovac project.

The beginning of volunteer work on the restoration of the drywall was on Friday, May 25 at 2 pm and after the completion of work on Saturday afternoon, volunteers, together with their mentors, visited the most famous natural attraction in NP “Krka” – Skradinski buk and got acquainted with valuable cultural and historical monuments that Krka preserves.

This volunteer action was held in parallel with the event Croatia Volunteers, which has been held for the eighth year in order to point out the importance of volunteering for the development of modern society in which each individual has the right and responsibility to contribute and in which such contribution is valued. Volunteering encourages building a better and stronger community. Differences and similarities are transformed into a force that weaves a living social network and shapes the future and authentic connection between people. This year’s Croatia Volunteers event took place from 21 to 26 May 2018. It is a week that also marks the European Parks Day, with numerous activities that connect natural heritage and cultural identity.

The project is funded by the European Union, from the European Social Fund, within the Operational Program Effective Human Resources 2014-2020, and the Office for Non-Governmental Organizations of the Government of the Republic of Croatia.
