The Sunce Association in cooperation with National Park Mljet is organizing the celebration of the International Biodiversity Day (May 22nd) and the European Day of Parks (May 24th). As part of the celebration, we will organize, in the National Park of Mljet, an exhibition “Let Blue Stay Blue” (opening May 22), workshops for children and other activities that you can see on the attached poster.
The International Day of Biodiversity was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1993. Every year, on May 22, we celebrate that day to remind ourselves that biodiversity greatly impacts on sustainable development and is deeply rooted in the survival of man on Earth.
The European Park Day was proclaimed by the Federation of National Parks of Europe (EUROPARC Federation) with the aim of raising the value of European protected areas and gaining public support in the implementation of its goals. It was first marked in 1999, and since then, on May 24, several events have been organized annually as a memorial to the designation of the first European parks – nine national parks in Sweden on 24 May 1909. This year’s anniversary of the European Park Day promotes the theme of Nature-Bridging Borders.
