Production, installation, and removal of collector for catching larvae of Pinna nobilis, as well as identification and removal of younger pinna from the collector (2022)

As part of the service, Sunce Association implemented the installation of collectors for catching the larvae of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis). In the period from 26. – 27.5.2022. 6 collectors were installed at two locations in the Mljet National Park area, while their extraction and inspection are planned for November 2022 to find larvae, i.e. young individuals of the noble pen shell.

The noble pen shell is the largest bivalve in the area of the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas. This endemic species is extremely important for the marine ecosystem because it filters large amounts of seawater. The service is part of the project “Preservation of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) in the Adriatic Sea” initiated by the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency, whose goal is to save this endemic bivalve from extinction.

The service includes the construction of collectors for Noble pen shell larvae, placing them at two locations in the Park, inspecting the collectors, and removing the juveniles for further transport to the aquarium.
