Plastic Smart City Dubrovnik

Sunce continues its cooperation with the City of Dubrovnik by implementing the Plastic Smart City Dubrovnik project, which goal is to reduce Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas plastic pollution and to contribute to the implementation of the Action Plan to reduce plastic pollution in the city of Dubrovnik for the period 2021-2026.

Just to remind you, trough the Plastic Smart Cities Croatia project, in cooperation with WWF Mediterranean and Sunce, the City of Dubrovnik worked on reducing plastic pollution in the sea. The project lasted for two years, where the cities of Dubrovnik and Trogir participated as partners, and by implementing project activities, they contributed to the reduction of the plastic pollution in various social life segments of the local community and encouraged the use of alternative solutions for single-use plastics.

The project resulted with an Action Plan to reduce plastic pollution in the city of Dubrovnik for the period 2021 – 2026. After the completion of the PSC Croatia project, at the beginning of 2022 the project was evaluated and it was concluded that there are challenges in the implementation of the guidelines from the Action Plan. The challenges primarily relate to the organization of plastic-free public events and the need for further education of hospitality workers and local residents for the implementation of the “reduce and reuse” principle. Therefore, as part of the Plastic Smart City Dubrovnik project, Sunce will work to raise awareness of the public and target groups about the need to implement the “reduce and reuse” principle.

The project is planned to provide education on how to hold plastic-free public events for representatives of caterers who participate in public events in Dubrovnik. Two plastic-free public events organized in Dubrovnik and other plastic-free public events organized by Sunce will be analyzed, as well as the biggest limitations and obstacles in the organization of such events. Good solutions applied in other Croatian and EU cities will be presented with the aim of applying those good solutions in Dubrovnik.

For the local population a SWAP fair will be organized , i.e. a trade fair for used objects. The fair is organized with the intention of promoting awareness of the need to reduce waste generation and reuse items. Rising product costs and reduced household budgets have popularized this type of “bartering,” because in addition to reducing waste and protecting the environment, we also save money by exchanging and sharing used items.

The activities of this project and the successful implementation of the Action Plan to reduce plastic pollution in the city of Dubrovnik for the period 2021-2026 should result in preventing the flow of plastic into the environment in the city by 2030 and reduce plastic pollution by 30% within two years.
