FAIRSEA – Fisheries in the Adriatic Region – a Shared Ecosystem Approach

The FAIRSEA project focuses on fisheries, an important economic activity in the Adriatic Sea, especially due to its strong cultural, social and economic role in regional coastal communities.

The overall objective of the project is to improve the conditions for the introduction of innovative approaches to sustainable fisheries management in the Adriatic Sea, based on the exchange of knowledge and the sharing of good practices among partners.

The main result of the project will be the development of an integrated platform for a quantitative ecosystem approach to fisheries, which transcends territorial boundaries and places emphasis on interdisciplinarity.

The platform will bring together biological-ecological processes and physico-chemical processes, as well as primary production, resource dynamics including their interaction, and bio-economic aspects of fisheries.

This high-tech and innovative platform will be used as a planning tool that will be able to test different approaches to fisheries management at the local level and at the level of the entire Adriatic. The platform is designed as a scientific basis for proposing and evaluating joint management decisions at national and international level, resulting from the cooperation of legislative institutions, experts and stakeholders in the fisheries sector. The project will provide answers on reference points, best practices and guidelines for optimizing the environmental and socio-economic sustainability of the fisheries sector in the Adriatic.

The FAIRSEA project is funded under the Interreg V-A IT-HR CBC Program (Priority Axis 1- Blue innovation).

The project holder is the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e Geofisica Sperimentale – OGS, and the project includes 11 other partners from Italy and Croatia: Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (HR), Croatian Agricultural and Forestry Advisory Service (HR), Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche – CNR (IT), Agenzia per i servizi nel settore agroalimentare delle Marche – ASSAM (IT), Coispa technologia & ricerca (IT), Consorzio nazionale interuniversitario per le scienze del mare (IT), Public institution RERA SD for coordination and development of Split-Dalmatia County (HR), Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce (HR), Gruppo di azione locale Venezia orientale (IT), Sveučilište u Splitu (HR), Associazione consiglio consultivo regionale del Mediterraneo (IT).
